2013 -14 was our busiest season ever!
From August 2013 - June 2014, we presented 111 public presentations of 17 live productions and 8 staged readings in New York and Chicago. We have been honored to work with 25 playwrights, 17 directors, 39 designers, dramaturgs, puppeteers, choreographers and technicians, 6 stage managers, 11 producers and 102 performers! The year started with the New York Innovative Theatre Foundation awarding us the Caffé Cino Fellowship Award in recognition of consistent production of outstanding work in Off-Off-Broadway. We restructured our programming to reflect our top priority: developing new full-length plays and solo shows and getting them in front of general and industry audiences. Through Groundworks and soloNOVA ARTS, we presented over 25 new works this season at over 110 public performances! Groundworks is our process where work is developed from first drafts to fully realized mainstage productions. In November/December, we presented terraNOVA Rx: Four Plays in Rep, featuring work by four Groundbreakers' alumni in the tier 3 workshop production. We produced Wink by Jen Silverman, Tranquil by Andrew Rosendorf, Animals Commit Suicide by J. Julian Christopher, and Death For Sydney Black by Leah Nanako Winkler. Under the Groundworks umbrella is our Groundbreakers Playwrights Group and soloNOVA ARTS. The 2013-14 Groundbreakers Playwrights Group began in January of 2014, when we selected six astounding playwrights to develop their plays in an 18-week intensive. After this intensive, we presented the Groundworks New Play Series of staged readings of the Groundbreakers plays: The Crying Lettuce by Alexandra Collier, Boomer’s Millennial Hero Story by Steve DiUbaldo, Location Location Location!!!! by Sukari Jones, Busted Dead Bolts by Boo Killibrew, The Third Thing by Jordan Seavey, and runboyrun by Mfoniso Udofia. The New Play Series also included The Wonder by Susan Ferrara, and Where Did We Sit On The Bus? by Brian Quijada, both part of our soloNOVA ARTS Workshops.
soloNOVA ARTS is our re-imagining of the soloNOVA Arts Festival. We have incorporated solo performances into our regular season, in both workshop and production formats, and this year presented Woman of Leisure and Panic by Charlotte Bydwell, Will Work For by Dacyl Acevedo, Sexless in The Boroughs by Colleen O'Connor (co-production with The Glass Eye), 10 Days by Vanessa Hidary, Just South of Renown by Jason Downs, Human Fruit Bowl by Andrea Kuchlewska, The Wonder by Susan Ferrara, and Where Did We Sit On The Bus? by Brian Quijada, all as part of our soloNOVA ARTS stream.
We are very excited about our terraNOVA Collective Chicago branch, which, under the careful eye of Resident Director Jo Cattell, has had two terraNOVA projects this year. A staged reading of J. Julian Christopher's Animals Commit Suicide was a highlight this winter, and this June, terraNOVA Collective Chicago presented a workshop presentation of Don Chipotle, a new play in development by Juan Francisco Villa.
THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to our season, and to our wonderful and responsive audiences for attending our productions, readings, and events throughout the year. |
